Cantons is a cross-disciplinary artist producing work in a variety of media including painting, photography, drawing, film and sculpture. Her work can be best described as autobiographical and confessional with political undercurrents. She produces works using techniques from within the field of expanded painting. Artworks may be based on photographs, sometimes her own sometimes found imagery but they often begin with questions and simple drawings. The source image is conceptually emptied but then replaced with a new interpretation during the act of painting. Cantons seeks to translate into something real what she is feeling in that time through painting it. Though her work cannot exist without photography, it is not the origin of the image that is important as she is concerned with the emotional response triggered within her and its potential for reinterpretation or translation as she is always preoccupied with the human environment and her desire for certainty.
